Small or Large Number Calculations
fMRI has been used to identify portions of the brain where more blood flows
during different mental mathematical calculations.
The brain image on the left is solving problems with small numbers,
and the image on the right is a brain solving equations using large numbers.
The brain image on the right
shows the visual cortex (in the back of the brain) is more active so mental visualization is involved with
larger numbers.
